You don't know how your opponent is going to run it. That is why theory hammer is Epic FAIL.

Well I know he isnt deep striking and I know he isnt outflanking.  He is going to keep the exorcists in the back and I am going to line up along the edge in one corner, so the game is going to go - I sit there and shoot while his foot elements run at me.

Its when you do that thing Dakka does where you put your list out there and they say "WELL I would just take 30 of x model that no one ever takes and you LOSE" That it is epic fail.  When they dont consider any sort of metagame and as if they could pick there army list after seeing the other person deploy.

I am not sold on the metagame. It's there but it's pretty much segmented due to local regions. You could walk into one store and see all mech Marines then walk into another and see lots of ork armies. You can tailor your list to do well for one type of metagame and then get trounced at another. Obviously to me the best lists are balanced and don't rely upon gimmicks to win. They will be hard hitting for sure and they will be designed to handle any army they face. I think it's possible to design a list that cannot be rock paper scissored.
